San Francisco City Hall Wedding with a Sunset Cruise Reception
There’s something effortlessly romantic about a San Francisco City Hall wedding. Between the grand architecture, sweeping staircases, and soft light filling the building, City Hall creates an elegant backdrop while still leaving room for the day to feel personal and relaxed. This wedding brought all of that together, followed by a sunset dinner cruise on the San Francisco Bay.
The day began at a San Francisco hotel, where the bride got ready alongside her bridesmaids. Between hair and makeup, champagne, and the quieter moments before leaving for the ceremony, the morning was filled with a mix of anticipation and excitement. One of the sweetest moments came when the bride read a letter from her groom before heading to City Hall.
A Wedding at San Francisco City Hall
The ceremony took place on the Mayor’s Balcony at San Francisco City Hall, surrounded by family and friends. With its ornate details and view overlooking the Rotunda, the Mayor’s Balcony is an incredible setting for couples who want the intimacy of a City Hall wedding while still celebrating with their closest people.
After the ceremony, we spent time throughout City Hall for newlywed portraits. The grand staircase, hallways, balconies, and elevators gave us plenty of opportunities for a combination of candid photographs and more intentionally directed portraits. From running through the halls to quiet moments together on the staircase, their portraits felt romantic without losing the energy of the day.
A San Francisco Bay Wedding Reception
After leaving City Hall, the celebration moved to the water for a sunset dinner cruise wedding reception on the San Francisco Bay.
Guests gathered aboard the boat for dinner, champagne, dancing, and views of San Francisco from the bay. As the light changed from golden hour into blue hour, the city became the backdrop for the rest of the evening. The bride and groom stepped onto the deck for portraits, danced together, and spent the night celebrating with their guests as the boat moved through the bay.
It was such a fun contrast to the elegance of City Hall—the day began surrounded by historic architecture and ended outside on the water with wind, sunset views, and a packed dance floor.
Planning a San Francisco City Hall Wedding
One of my favorite things about photographing weddings at San Francisco City Hall is how much freedom couples have to make the rest of the day their own. A City Hall ceremony doesn’t have to mean keeping the entire wedding simple or traditional. You can head to dinner with your closest people, explore the city for portraits, plan a larger reception, or—in this case—celebrate on a sunset cruise around the San Francisco Bay.
As a Bay Area wedding photographer, I photograph wedding days with a candid yet curated approach, documenting the unscripted moments while also offering direction when it makes sense. If you’re planning a San Francisco City Hall wedding and want photographs that feel natural, romantic, and true to the way the day actually felt, I’d love to hear what you’re planning.
